Juan Carlos is an exceptional artist, who truly encompasses vibrant colour, positivity and an intense twist of Magical Realism with a sprinkle of bold fabulism.

Born on Dec. 26, 1977 in Anserma Caldas, Colombia. At the age of 5 years old he moved to Pereira with his family who entered him into a regional drawing contest aimed at discovering talented young artists. He went on to win the contest.

From this day on Cepeda focused on incorporating fabulism and fantasy into his work. Influenced by his strong faith in Catholicism he often assimilates catholic subject matter into his compelling yet thought provoking work.

At the age of 15, Cepeda moved to Botogá to enroll in an intense art workshop. His undisputed talent recognised by the professors of the National University of Botogá continued his studies and he developed techniques and theories that made him one of the leading artists in Colombia’s contemporary art movement. At the age of 25 years old, he was recognised and presented an award as one of the youngest and most versatile artists of Colombia.

During his early career Cepeda fluctuated between artistic movements like:
Expressionism, Impressionism, Cubism, Hyperrealism, Costumbrismo and Figurativism, to achieve a diverse variety of technical abilities and he became highly regarded for his ability to flow seamlessly from a variety of different techniques. His fine art was highly admired for his varying techniques and intense colour palette.

At the age of 30, Cepeda moved to Chicago, United States of America where he built up his recognition. His passion for studying old masters, galleries and museums has enabled him to admire, understand and use techniques, textures and colour palettes of museum worthy artists.

During his time in the United Sates Of America he attracted the attention of Aldo Castillo, who invited him to participate in an exhibition of the top 42 global artists “Ones To Watch.”

After an incredibly enriching and rewarding experience, Cepeda returned to Colombia and due to the magical nature of his work he gained tremendous recognition. Art collectors from around the world (i.e. Russia, Germany, Spain, England, Australia, United States of America and Latin America) purchased his paintings. In 2016, Cepeda was invited by one of the leading galleries in West Palm Beach, Miami to participate in a solo exhibition and created an unforgettable painting live on stage.

In 2017, Cepeda participated in the Spectrum Art Basel 2017 show, accompanied by Colombian artists Walter Zuluaga, Carla Garzón, Jhon Jaimer Morales and Jason Diaz. His work gained critical acclaim for capturing a compelling realism within a bold yet mature style.

Cepeda’s work has been showcased in international exhibitions and collections throughout the world. His defined style has become famous for displaying realism when mundane subjects are depicted. Thus creating an interior mystery to the subject and a magical or mysterious nature of the rational world.

His images are deliberately planned and result from conscious thought. The ideas are largely generated by the external world and involve recognisable human activities, using carefully planned illusionist devices. Cepeda injects a sense of magic into realistic scenes. As a result, the term ‘Magic Realism’ describes his work accurately. His work is an attempt to represent human beings’ desire to believe in the impossible.’

“If Magic Realism does exist between the two poles of realism (north) and pure fantasy (south), we will need a metaphysical compass to assist our exploration. Cepeda’s components include artistic sensibilities, acute powers of observation and a knowledge of the traditions of art history.”
