Julio Parra Colombian, b. 1968
Julio Parra is a contemporary Colombian artist based in Medellín. Often compared to Jean-Michel Basquiat, his work draws from graffiti, street culture, mythology, cartoons, and childlike drawing to explore identity, inequality and urban life in Colombia. Through vibrant marks and fragmented language, Parra creates emotionally charged works that reflect social injustice, memory and the tensions of capitalism. His bold visual language and layered references position him as one of the most distinctive voices in Colombia’s contemporary art scene.
Through emotionally and psychologically evocative works, Parra provides a lens on capitalism, urban life, memory, and inequality, captivating audiences within a society seeking balance between dark undercurrents and the ideals of Magic Realism.
