About Bowljaboy
An up and coming potter from Singapore, Brian Chang aka Bowljaboy, first discovered his passion for ceramics through his time studying abroad in Los Angeles, America. It was at Bitter Root Pottery, a community studio in LA, where he nurtured his foundational skills, drawing inspiration from experienced instructors and fellow artists. Despite being relatively new to the pottery scene with nearly two years of practice, Brian has already stepped into teaching, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the craft at Bitter Root Pottery before returning to Singapore to instruct at 7879 Ceramics. Brian advocates for ceramics as a therapeutic practice, particularly for those with ADHD. He views pottery as a mindful, transformative experience that enhances self-expression and focus, aiming to inspire others to embrace its cathartic benefits through teaching.
“PRACTICING CERAMICS WAS THE FIRST TIME I EVER FELT LIKE I COULD EXPRESS MYSELF CREATIVELY, NOW I HAD BOTH THE MEANS AND THE MESSAGE. I’VE SINCE DABBLED WITH PAINTING AND CALLIGRAPHY, BUT WOULD HAVE NEVER GOTTEN THE CONFIDENCE TO WITHOUT FIRST TRYING CERAMICS - I WOULDN’T HAVE HAD THE DESIRE WITHOUT THE ‘LONGING’.”
Brian works primarily with stoneware and porcelain clay at mid-fire range (cone 5-6), he aims for a minimalistic style when it comes to glazing, putting more emphasis on form and material. His pieces thoughtfully integrate elements of calligraphy, reinterpreted through a contemporary and freeform approach. Drawing inspiration from renowned artists such as Moon Do Bang, Kansai Noguchi, Erin Ibo and Catalina Cheng, he acknowledges these figures as pivotal influences in his artistic journey. His practice often delves into themes of playfulness, expression, contrast, and the interplay between structure and organic symbolism. Looking ahead, Brian aspires to establish his own studio, with a focus on creating an interactive tableware brand that brings art into everyday life. This vision reflects his passion for blending functionality with aesthetic expression.
